Spanglish (2004)

PLOT

When a Mexican mother and her daughter come to the United States, the mother, Flor Moreno, gets a job as a maid at the home of a successful chef John Clasky, his insecure wife Deborah, their two children, and Deborah’s mother. Despite Flor’s lack of an English language vocabulary, she tries the best she can to assist the Clasky family in more than just house cleaning matters. However, when Flor is forced to live with the family over the summer, she has no choice but to bring her daughter, Christina along. Deborah, much to Flor’s disliking, treats Flor’s daughter much like her own and at the same time she hurts the feelings of her own daughter, Bernice, as well as Flor. When John’s dreams begin to unravel, he begins to feel like his whole world is coming down around him, but with the love of his children and with the help of Flor, he finds himself trying to get through it all. Flor’s daughter Christina, through which this story is told in a college letter to Princeton University, serves as a translator for the beginning of the film, but after Flor breaks the communication bridge by learning to speak English, Christina must learn that things come and go in life, but family is the most important thing a person can have.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

PLOT

Barry Egan runs his own company, is continually hounded by his seven sisters, and every now and then gets a tiny bit violent. One odd morning a harmonium first appears in the street then a striking young lady asks for his help with her car. She re-appears a few days later and there seems to be a spark between them, but can they possibly cut through his seemingly over-complicated life and his somewhat unusual interpersonal skills?

Big Daddy (1999/I)

PLOT

Sonny Koufax graduated from law school years ago but chose not to take the bar exam. Instead he works as a toll booth collector, and spends his day loafing around. One day his grilfriend decides that she has had enough, and tells Sonny that things have to change or else it’s over. When Sonny’s roommate Kevin leaves for China, a boy is dropped at their place and is told that he is Kevin’s son but Kevin doesn’t know his mother. Sonny takes care of him, and after spending sometime with him decides to adopt hoping that maybe his girlfriend will be impressed. But when he learns that she has a new boyfriend, Sonny tries to have the boy sent back to his mother but when he learns that she died and that he would be sent to an orphanage, Sonny decides to take care of him.

The Straight Story (1999)

PLOT

Laurens, Iowa, 1994. Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) is a 73-year-old frail old man who walks using sticks, and lives with his slow-witted daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek). One night, during a raging thunderstorm, Alvin gets a phone call from a hospital informing him that his 75-year-old estranged brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) has suffered a stroke.

Determined to meet and patch things up with his brother before either one of the dies, Alvin decides to visit him. The trouble is that Lyle lives over 300 miles away in Mount Zion, Wisconsin, and Alvin is legally unable to drive a car due to his bad health and poor eyesight. To make matters worse, Rose cannot drive either and they have no money for a bus fair. Undaunted, Alvin hatches a plan: he will drive his Rhoda lawn mower all the way.

Sadly the Rhoda is not up to the task and splutters to a halt 10 miles away outside the town of West Bend (Home of the Grotto). Reunited with his daughter, Alvins stubbornness knows no bounds, so he approaches Tom the Dealer (Everett McGill) to fix him up with a new vehicle: a 1966 John Deere riding lawn mower with a top speed of five miles per hour from Tom’s personal collection.

On September 15, Alvin sets off once more to Wisconsin. By day he travels on the road and at nights he camps out in the fields off the road making a campfire for himself every night. Alvins epic journey sees him meeting a pregnant, runaway hitchhiker (Anastasia Webb) whom he inspires to return to her family after a nightly campfire cookout.

A few days later, Alvin encounters and comes in last in a bicycle race a local town is having. Then, Alvin encounters a frantic woman (Barbara E. Robertson) who has hit a deer and she tells him that she appears to have an unwanted ability to make deer come out and act like lemmings in front of her moving car.

On October 8, as the landscape begins to undulate, Alvin’s trusty mower goes out of control and he speeds down a steep hill and it turns out to have fan-belt and transmission failure. So, five weeks after leaving home, Alvin is forced to wait again for it to be repaired and staying with a kindly couple called the Riordans (James Cada, Sally Wingert).

Haggling with the Olsen twins Thorvald and Harold (John and Kevin P. Farley) so that he can afford the bill, Alvin sets off again. Staying in a church cemetery for one night Alvin confides his life and problems to a local priest (John Lordan) and his determination to complete the trip. Alvin then crosses the Mississippi River into Wisconsin, slowly approaching his brother’s home.

After stopping in a bar in Mount Zion and drinking his first beer in years, Alvin makes the final stage of his journey down a dirt road to his brother’s shack where he is finally reunited with Lyle at last.

The Last House on the Left (2009)

PLOT

After settling their affairs, Emma (Monica Potter), John (Tony Goldwyn), and Mari Collingwood (Sara Paxton) head out on vacation to their lake house. Shortly after arriving, Mari borrows the family car and drives into town to spend time with her friend Paige (Martha MacIsaac). While Paige works the cash register at a local store, she and Mari meet Justin (Spencer Treat Clark), a teenager passing through the town who invites them both back to his hotel room to smoke some weed. While the three are hanging out in the hotel room, Krug (Garret Dillahunt), Justins father, Francis (Aaron Paul), Justins uncle, and Sadie (Riki Lindhome), Krug’s girlfriend, arrive.

Krug shows Justin a local newspaper that has Krug’s and Sadie’s pictures on the front page, which explains how Sadie and Francis broke Krug out of police custody and killed the two officers that were transporting him. Believing it too risky to let Paige and Mari go, Krug kidnaps them and uses their vehicle to leave town. While Krug searches for the highway, Mari convinces him to take a road that leads him to her parents lake house; Mari then attempts to jump out of the vehicle, but the ensuing fight amongst all the passengers causes Krug to crash into a tree. Frustrated by Mari’s attempts to escape, Sadie and Francis proceed to beat Mari as she crawls away from the wreckage. Krug attempts to teach his son to “be a man” by forcing him to fondle Mari’s breasts. When Justin refuses Krug decides to rape Mari. Paige begins insulting him to get him to stop, which causes Krug to pause momentarily only to stab Paige in the stomach twice. As Mari watches Paige bleed to death she is raped by Krug. Afterward, Mari musters enough strength to escape the group and make it to the lake so that she can swim to safety. Before she can swim far enough Krug shoots her in the back, leaving her to bleed out in the lake.

A storm forces Krug and his gang to seek refuge with John and Emma, whose home is nearby. Justin realizes that they are Mari’s parents, and intentionally leaves a necklace Mari was wearing on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari, barely alive, on their porch, along with the necklace from the counter, they realize that the people who did this to Mari are in their home. As they try and find the key to their boat, so that they can take Mari to the hospital, they decide to get revenge on those responsible. When Francis happens upon Mari’s body he is attacked and killed by John and Emma. When the couple go after Krug and Sadie they find Justin in possession of Krug’s gun; Justin gives the gun to John so he can kill Krug. Sadie awakens and interrupts John, allowing Krug the chance to escape the couple where he pieces together that they are Mari’s parents. After Emma shoots Sadie in the head, John runs after Krug. With a combined effort from Emma, John and Justin, Krug is knocked unconscious. John paralyzes Krug from the neck down, and leaves him to die with his head in an active microwave; then he, Emma, Mari, and Justin take the boat to the local hospital.
